Question

I have a water-based formula using a water-phase thickener. I want to add 4-n Butylresorcinol. What forms are available, what are their properties (solubility, usage percentage, addition method), and which form is suitable for my water-based formula?

Answer

Adding 4-n Butylresorcinol to Your Formula

Based on your existing formula and the available products, you can add 4-n Butylresorcinol, but the specific product you choose will determine how it's incorporated and the recommended usage rate.

There are two main forms available:

  1. Activated Resorcinol™ (4-Butyl Resorcinol)

    • Solubility: This form is oil-soluble. Your current formula is primarily water-based and uses a water-phase thickener (Pro Polymer), not an emulsifier for an oil phase. Adding this form would require significantly modifying your formula to include an oil phase and an emulsifier.
    • Usage Percentage: If you were to create an oil-in-water emulsion formula, the recommended usage rate for this leave-on product would be 0.1% to 1.0%.
    • Addition Step: In an emulsion formula, it would be dissolved in the oil phase without using heat.
  2. NanoRes™ (Liposome 4-Butyl Resorcinol, Nano Size)

    • Solubility: This form is water-soluble and is designed to be easily incorporated into water-based systems like yours.
    • Usage Percentage: You can add this form at a concentration of 1.0% to 10.0%.
    • Addition Step: Since it is water-soluble, you can dissolve NanoRes™ directly into the water phase of your formula. It can be added after the main water ingredients are mixed, typically before adding the thickener or dissolved in a small amount of water and added to the main batch.

Recommendation for Your Formula:

Given your formula is water-based, NanoRes™ is the most suitable option as it is water-soluble and can be easily added without major formula changes. You can add NanoRes™ at a percentage between 1.0% and 10.0% by dissolving it in the water phase.

Both Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) and N-Acetyl Glucosamine in your formula are compatible with 4-n Butylresorcinol.

Remember to store the finished product away from light, as 4-n Butylresorcinol can be light-sensitive.
