Making Simple Lip Balm

Your simple lip balm recipe using beeswax, oils, and butters is a great starting point.

Adding Flavor

For adding flavor to your lip balm:

• If you are adding a small amount (0.5-2%), you can typically add it directly to the melted oil/wax mixture during the cooling phase.
• If you use a higher concentration of flavor or notice separation, you may need an ingredient to help blend the flavor into the oil base. Products like Oil Blender or Water Balm can help improve the stability and prevent separation when incorporating flavors or small amounts of water-based ingredients.

Adding Preservative

While oil-based products like lip balm are less susceptible to microbial growth than water-based products, adding a preservative is still recommended to prevent contamination, especially since the product will be in contact with the lips and potentially exposed to moisture.
Consider using broad-spectrum preservatives suitable for oil-based or anhydrous formulas. Examples include Mild Preserved™ COS, NaturePreserve™ Ultra, or Preserve-BSB™. Always check the usage instructions and recommended concentration for the specific preservative you choose.

General Mixing Method

1. Melt the beeswax, butters, and solid oils together in a heat-resistant container using a double boiler or low heat.
2. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in your liquid oils.
3. Let the mixture cool slightly.
4. Add the flavor and the chosen preservative. Stir well to ensure even distribution.
5. Carefully pour the mixture into your lip balm containers.
6. Allow the lip balm to cool and solidify completely before capping and using.
