Question

I would like to ask if it is possible to add various oils or Essential Oil to soap or shampoo that uses Easy Thick as a thickener.

If possible, what percentage can be added, and at what step should it be added?

Answer

Adding Oils or Essential Oils to Formulas Using Easy Thick™

Easy Thick™ is primarily designed to provide viscosity and thicken the water and detergent phases in shampoo and liquid soap formulations. While it is possible to add small amounts of oils or essential oils to a formula thickened with Easy Thick™, it's important to note that Easy Thick™ is not specifically an emulsifier for large oil phases.

Adding oils might potentially affect the stability and thickening performance of the formula, especially if added in significant amounts. The amount that can be successfully incorporated without causing separation or loss of viscosity is typically very limited and depends heavily on the overall composition of your shampoo or soap base.

Recommended Procedure (if adding oils):

If you wish to try adding oils or essential oils, it is generally recommended to add them after the Easy Thick™ has been fully dissolved in the heated water/detergent phase and the mixture has cooled down slightly. Add the oil phase slowly while stirring well to try and incorporate it evenly.

Percentage:

There is no specific recommended percentage for oil addition when using Easy Thick™ as the primary thickener, as its main function is not oil emulsification. You should start with very low percentages (e.g., 0.1-0.5%) and test the stability and viscosity of the final product. Adding higher percentages may lead to instability or reduced thickening.

It is highly recommended to perform small-scale tests first to ensure the stability and desired texture of your final product when incorporating oils or essential oils into a formula using Easy Thick™.
