Question

I have a hair conditioner base and want to add Silicone Shine, Silicone Hi-Cond, and fragrance. How should I incorporate these ingredients into the base? I was considering using 20% Silicone Shine; is this an appropriate percentage, or what concentration is recommended? What emulsifier/solubilizer should I use for Silicone Shine and fragrance?

Answer

Adding Silicones and Fragrance to Your Conditioner Base

Based on your basic hair conditioner formula, here is how you can incorporate Silicone Shine, Silicone Hi-Cond, and Fragrance:

  • Silicone Hi-Cond (Aminopropyl Dimethicone): This ingredient can be added directly into your formula.

  • Silicone Shine: This silicone requires an emulsifier to be properly incorporated into the formula. It is recommended to use Butter Cream Maker at a concentration of 3-4% to emulsify Silicone Shine at a concentration of 5-10%. (Note: A concentration of 20% Silicone Shine is considered too high for this base).

  • Fragrance: Fragrance oils need to be dissolved in a solubilizer before being added to the water-based formula. Use Flora Solve Clear to pre-dissolve the fragrance before adding the mixture to your conditioner base.
