Question

I made a cream formulation using the following ingredients:

  • Shea Butter 2.00%
  • Macadamia Nut Oil (Deodorized) 1.00%
  • Light Cream Maker™ 1.50%

After mixing, the cream has a sticky and liquid texture. How can I adjust the formula to fix this issue and achieve a better texture?

Answer

Subject: How to fix sticky cream texture

Regarding your cream formulation that resulted in a sticky and liquid texture after mixing, the staff has provided recommendations to improve the texture:

  1. Replace heavier oils/emulsifier with lighter emollients:

    • Remove Shea Butter (2.00%), Macadamia Nut Oil (Deodorized) (1.00%), and Light Cream Maker™ (1.50%).
    • Replace them with lighter emollients to emphasize a lighter feel. For example, use LipidSoft Dry (5%) or LipidSoft Lite (5%).
    • If you prefer a smoother texture, you may also consider adding Cyclomethicone (5%).
  2. Add powder emollients (if still sticky):

    • If the texture is still sticky after the first step, consider adding powder ingredients that help adjust the texture at a higher level.
    • Examples include PowderCream, MatteSilica, or SiliSilk. These are more effective than liquid emollients but are also more expensive.
    • Start with an addition of around 3%.
  3. Reduce moisturizing active ingredients (if still sticky):

    • If stickiness persists, adjust by reducing the amount of certain active ingredients that function as moisturizers.
    • In your formula, TreMoisture™ (Trehalose) is identified as one such ingredient.

These adjustments aim to reduce the heavy and sticky feel, resulting in a more pleasant texture.
