Adjusting Serum Viscosity with AnyGel: Formula Recalculation vs. Spot Fix
Question
Regarding increasing the thickness of a serum using AnyGel:
Does increasing the amount of AnyGel (from the original 1% up to a maximum of 2% as previously recommended) require recalculating the proportions of other ingredients or reducing the amount of Distilled Water? Or can AnyGel simply be added gradually as needed, as long as the total amount does not exceed 2% of the original formula?
Answer
Regarding your question about adjusting AnyGel for thicker serum:
For a new formula: If you want to increase the thickness by adding more AnyGel (up to the recommended 1.5-2.0% total), you must recalculate the percentages of all ingredients so that the total sum remains 100%. This means the percentage of other ingredients, including water, will need to be reduced proportionally.
For the current batch: The previous suggestion to add 0.25-0.5% AnyGel was a way to try and fix the existing batch that didn't thicken properly. You can add this small amount directly and mix well. However, this is a temporary adjustment for that specific batch and will slightly change the overall percentages from your intended formula.
So, to summarize: For future batches, adjust the formula percentages from the beginning to include the desired higher percentage of AnyGel (e.g., 1.5-2.0%), reducing other ingredients accordingly. For the current batch, you can add a small amount as a temporary fix without recalculating everything, but the final percentages will be slightly off.
