Adjusting Shampoo Base Texture to Gel
Question
I used the following formula: Sulfate Free Shampoo Base (pH 7, Clear, Foaming) 15%, Water 73.5%, Glycerin 99.5% 5%, 1,3-Propanediol (Natural) 3%, Zinc PCA 1%, Citromask 0.5%, SugarThick 2%, Mild Preserved Eco 1%. I tried making it, but it turned out liquid instead of a gel. I'm not sure if I need to increase or decrease any ingredients.
Answer
Based on your formulation, the reason it's liquid instead of a gel is likely because the amount of thickener used is insufficient.
The primary thickener in your formula is SugarThick. To achieve a gel consistency, you should increase the percentage of SugarThick.
- Action: Gradually increase the percentage of SugarThick.
- Adjustment: For every percentage point you increase SugarThick, you should decrease the Water percentage by the same amount to keep the total at 100%.
- Recommendation: Start by increasing SugarThick by 0.5% or 1% at a time, mixing well, and checking the consistency until you reach the desired gel texture. The maximum recommended usage for SugarThick is typically up to 10%, but you will likely achieve a gel consistency well before that.
