Question

I ordered a Base serum and it is very thick/sticky. What ingredients can I add to modify its texture? What ingredients should I avoid adding, and do you have any recommendations for this process?

Answer

Adding ingredients to a thick base serum can help improve its texture and reduce stickiness. However, adding ingredients to a pre-made base can affect the product's stability and efficacy, so it's best to experiment with small amounts first.

Ingredients that can help reduce stickiness and lighten the texture include:

  • Lightweight Oils/Esters: Such as Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride or Fractionated Coconut Oil, which are medium-chain triglycerides. They are fast-absorbing, non-greasy, and help make the serum smoother and easier to spread.
  • Silicone Fluids/Gels: Such as Silicone Gel Ultra Low Viscosity (Super Powderly) or Silicone Gel 9040 (e.q. DC 9040, Cyclopentasiloxane Base). These help the product glide smoothly, spread easily, provide a soft, powdery feel, and effectively reduce tackiness.

Things to be cautious about and generally avoid adding unnecessarily:

  • Incompatible Ingredients: Adding ingredients that are not compatible with the original base can cause the serum to separate, become cloudy, or spoil easily.
  • Ionic Ingredients: If the original serum base uses charged thickeners, adding ingredients with opposite charges can cause the serum to thicken further or precipitate.
  • Highly Concentrated Actives: Adding other active ingredients might result in an excessively high overall concentration or disrupt the stability of the original base.
  • Potential Irritants: Such as fragrances or certain extracts that might not be suitable for the skin.
  • Contamination: Ensure all equipment and containers used are clean to prevent microbial growth.

Recommendations for Adjustment:

  1. Experiment with Small Amounts: Take a small portion of the serum and gradually add the desired ingredient in small increments (e.g., 0.5-1%). Mix thoroughly and observe the change in texture.
  2. Choose Compatible Ingredients: Knowing the main components of the original base serum will help you select more suitable ingredients to add.
  3. Consider Lightweight Oil/Ester or Silicone: These two groups are generally safe and effective options for adjusting the texture to be lighter.
  4. Keep Records: Note down what you added and in what quantity so you can replicate the process if you achieve a satisfactory texture.
