Alcohol-Free Roll-On Perfume Formulation & Scent Diffusion

Question

I would like to try making Product Name myself, specifically an alcohol-free oil-based roll-on perfume.

I plan to use:

  • Product Name at 40-50%
  • Product Name as the carrier oil

Is this correct?

If I want the scent to diffuse widely (หอมฟุ้งกระจาย), what else should I add? Or are these two ingredients sufficient?

Answer

You are on the right track with using fragrance oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil for an alcohol-free roll-on perfume. Fractionated Coconut Oil is an excellent carrier oil for this purpose due to its light texture and stability.

Regarding the concentration, 40-50% fragrance oil is quite a high percentage for a perfume, even for an oil-based one. While it will result in a very strong scent, it could potentially be overwhelming or cause skin irritation for some people. A more typical concentration for oil-based perfumes is usually in the range of 15% to 30%, depending on the strength of the specific fragrance oil and your desired intensity. You might want to start with a lower concentration, perhaps 20-25%, and see if the scent intensity is sufficient before going higher.

Now, about making the scent "หอมฟุ้งกระจาย" (diffuse or project more). This is the main difference between oil-based and alcohol-based perfumes. Alcohol evaporates quickly, carrying the scent molecules into the air and creating a noticeable scent trail (sillage). Oils, on the other hand, evaporate very slowly, keeping the fragrance much closer to the skin.

It is challenging to make an oil-based perfume diffuse as widely as an alcohol-based one without adding volatile components like alcohol. Ingredients often referred to as "fixatives" in perfumery, such as certain resins or aroma chemicals, are primarily used to:

  • Help the fragrance last longer on the skin by slowing down the evaporation of more volatile top and middle notes.
  • Provide a stable base for the fragrance composition.
  • Help blend the different scent notes together smoothly.

While some fixatives can subtly influence projection, they won't dramatically increase the airborne diffusion in a pure oil base in the way alcohol does.

Based on the search results, some examples of ingredients that function as fixatives or base notes include:

  • Resinoids: Such as Styrax Resinoid or Labdanum Absolute.
  • Aroma Chemicals: Certain synthetic molecules like Cosmone or Traseolide (types of musk).

So, while adding a fixative like Styrax Resinoid, Labdanum Absolute, Cosmone, or Traseolide could help your perfume last longer and potentially add depth to the base notes, it's unlikely to make it "ฟุ้งกระจาย" like an alcohol spray.

Using just the fragrance oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil is perfectly fine for a standard oil-based roll-on perfume. This will give you a personal fragrance that wears close to the skin, which is preferred by many people. Adding fixatives is an optional step if you want to experiment with extending the wear time or modifying the base scent, but it won't replicate the diffusion of an alcohol-based perfume.
