Question

I have a vanilla fragrance oil that sometimes has an alcoholic smell.

1. Is this caused by air?
2. Is there a way to remove this smell?
3. Do you have any recommendations for stable vanilla fragrance oils that don't change smell?

Answer

Addressing the Alcoholic Note in Vanilla Scent

The alcoholic note you're detecting in your vanilla scent is likely due to the solvent used in the fragrance oil itself, rather than just exposure to air. Many fragrance oils use alcohol or other solvents to help the aroma chemicals blend and disperse.

While air exposure isn't the primary cause of the alcoholic note, improper storage (like leaving the container open) can potentially affect the overall scent quality over time.

To potentially reduce the perception of the alcoholic note:

  • Allow to air out briefly: Before adding the fragrance to your formulation, you could try leaving the container open for a short period to allow some of the more volatile solvent notes to dissipate. However, do not leave it open for too long as this can degrade the fragrance.
  • Proper Dilution: Ensure the fragrance is properly diluted in your final product according to recommended usage rates. Dilution often helps the intended scent profile emerge and can make solvent notes less prominent.
  • Consider the Base: The base you are adding the fragrance to can also influence how the scent is perceived.

Stable Vanilla Scent Recommendations

For stable vanilla scents that are less prone to changing, consider these options:

  • Vanillin (FEMA-3107): This is a primary component of natural vanilla and is widely used. It provides a classic vanilla note and is generally very stable.
  • Ethyl Vanillin (FEMA-2464): This is a synthetic alternative to Vanillin, often stronger and slightly different in aroma. It is also known for its stability.
  • Sweet Vanilla: This is a fragrance oil blend that aims for a sweet vanilla profile. Blended fragrance oils are formulated for stability in various applications.
  • Vanilla Cookie House: Another fragrance oil blend, offering a different take on vanilla with cookie notes, also designed for stability in use.

Choosing a high-quality, stable form like Vanillin, Ethyl Vanillin, or a well-formulated fragrance oil blend such as Sweet Vanilla or Vanilla Cookie House, and storing it correctly in a sealed container away from light and heat, will help maintain its intended scent profile.
