Alternative Thickeners and Opacifiers for Glitter Shampoo at pH 5.5

Asked by: spark_za On: October 25, 2018 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

I want to add small glitter particles to a shampoo formula that is not clear. The formula is intended to have a pH of 5.5.

  1. Are there any other thickeners besides ClearClean that can be used to suspend the glitter?
  2. If I want to make the formula opaque white without a pearlescent effect, are there any ingredients I can use besides emulPearl and oils?

Answer

Regarding Glitter in Shampoo and Opacifiers

Thank you for your questions regarding formulating shampoo with glitter and achieving opacity.

Regarding suspending small glitter particles in a non-clear shampoo formula at pH 5.5, besides ClearClean:

The staff has advised that other thickeners generally do not create the same type of gel structure as ClearClean, which is highly effective at suspending particles like glitter or beads. If you use other thickeners, you might need to use a higher concentration to achieve sufficient viscosity to suspend the glitter. An example alternative mentioned is using AnyGel to create a water gel base before adding other ingredients.

Regarding making the formula opaque white without a pearlescent effect, besides emulPearl and oils:

The staff is currently checking for suitable alternative ingredients and will inform you once they have the information.

We will provide the complete answer once the information on alternative opacifiers is available.
