Question
In a Cleansing Oil formulation using Oilsify 15, it is recommended to use Butylene Glycol. Since glycols and oils are generally not soluble but can be miscible, can Butylene Glycol be added directly to the oil phase? Or does Oilsify 15 act as an emulsifier to combine Butylene Glycol with the oil phase?
Answer
Butylene Glycol Properties and Usage
Regarding Butylene Glycol:
- Solubility: Butylene Glycol is generally not soluble in oil. However, it can be miscible with oil, meaning they can be mixed without separating, but it does not truly dissolve in oil. It is soluble in water.
- Heat Resistance: Butylene Glycol can withstand heat.
- Addition Step: It should typically be added to the water phase of a cosmetic formulation.
In the case of using Butylene Glycol in a cleansing oil formula with Oilsify 15, while Butylene Glycol itself doesn't dissolve in oil, Oilsify 15 acts as an emulsifier that helps to combine or bridge the Butylene Glycol with the oil phase.
