Question
Inquiry regarding Bakuchiol EZ™ usage
Can Bakuchiol EZ™ (Water-Soluble Bakuchiol 15%) be applied directly (pure) to the face?
Answer
Bakuchiol EZ™ (Water-Soluble Bakuchiol 15%) is a highly concentrated ingredient and should not be applied directly (pure) to the face.
Here are the reasons why it must be diluted:
- High Active Concentration: This product contains 15% Bakuchiol. The recommended effective and safe concentration of Bakuchiol on the skin is typically between 0.5% and 1.5%. Applying it pure would be over 10 times the recommended dose.
- Irritation Risk: The concentrate contains a high percentage of surfactants (Polysorbate 20 ~59%) and solvents (Ethoxydiglycol ~25%) to make the Bakuchiol water-soluble. Applying these at 100% concentration can lead to skin irritation, dryness, or a compromised skin barrier.
- Usage Rate: The manufacturer recommends a usage rate of 3% to 10% in your formulation.
- Using 3% of this concentrate provides ~0.45% Bakuchiol active.
- Using 10% of this concentrate provides ~1.5% Bakuchiol active.
Recommendation:
You should mix this concentrate into a base such as a water-based serum, gel, or cream. For example, to make a 5% concentration, mix 5g of Bakuchiol EZ™ with 95g of your base product. Always perform a patch test before full application.
