Choosing and Cleaning Containers for Cosmetic Making

Question

I have two questions regarding making cosmetics:

  1. Container Alternatives: Can I use containers other than glass beakers, such as glass jars or plastic containers, for weighing ingredients and making cream? I'm concerned about the weight of the container potentially exceeding the capacity of my 200g digital scale, and also about potential reactions with plastic.
  2. Cleaning Procedures: What is the proper method for cleaning containers used for making and storing cream, both for new containers and those that have been previously used for cosmetics?

Answer

Regarding using other containers instead of glass beakers:

  • Glass beakers are recommended because they are heat resistant and do not react with ingredients.
  • Plastic containers are generally not recommended because some types may react with ingredients, and they are not heat resistant.
  • Using other glass containers like jars might be possible, but be aware of their weight, especially if using a digital scale with a weight limit (like the 200g scale mentioned). The container's weight might exceed the scale's capacity before adding ingredients.

Regarding cleaning containers for making and storing cream:

  • New containers: Wash thoroughly with clean water and let them dry completely before use.
  • Used containers (previously contained cosmetics):
    • Wash thoroughly, ensuring no soap residue remains.
    • Soak in alcohol for a while to ensure no residue or microorganisms are left.
    • Dry completely.
    • Some users also mentioned using a test tube brush for cleaning bottles, scalding with hot water, and drying on tissue paper to avoid potential bacteria from dish racks.
