คำถาม
Hello, I would like to inquire about formulating with antioxidants to protect a formula containing cationic ion metal substances.
For example, when using Hi-EGCG (green tea extract) with Zinc PCA:
- Can I use
Active protect OXto protect the formulation? - Or should I use another chemical such as
Protect OX?
Thank you.
คำตอบ
For a formulation containing Hi-EGCG™ (Green Tea Extract) and Zinc PCA, ActiveProtec™ OX is the highly recommended choice for protecting the formula, rather than Protec™ OX.
Why ActiveProtec™ OX is the right choice:
- Chelating Properties (Metal Ion Protection): Zinc PCA releases zinc ions (metal ions) into the formula. These ions can act as catalysts that significantly accelerate the oxidation and discoloration of EGCG (Green Tea Extract). ActiveProtec™ OX contains powerful chelating agents (such as Disodium EDTA and Sodium Diethylenetriamine Pentamethylene Phosphonate) specifically designed to bind these metal ions, preventing them from reacting with and degrading the EGCG.
- Solubility Match: Both Zinc PCA and Hi-EGCG™ are water-soluble. ActiveProtec™ OX is also water-soluble, making it easy to incorporate into the water phase of your formulation. In contrast, Protec™ OX is oil-soluble and requires heat to dissolve, which may not be suitable for a purely water-based serum or gel.
- Direct Recommendation: The product specifications for Hi-EGCG™ explicitly state that ActiveProtec™ OX at 1% should be used to prevent metal ions from destroying the quality of the extract.
Important Formulation Tips:
- pH Control: Both Zinc PCA and Hi-EGCG™ are most stable and soluble at a pH of 4.0–6.0. If the pH is outside this range, you may encounter precipitation or rapid degradation.
- Avoid Vitamin E: Do not use any form of Vitamin E in this specific formula, as it can negatively impact the stability of the EGCG.
- Packaging: EGCG is very sensitive to light. Always use opaque or UV-protected packaging to maintain the efficacy and color of the product.
- Electrolyte Awareness: ActiveProtec™ OX is an electrolyte. If your formula uses a thickener that is sensitive to electrolytes (like Carbomer), you may need to switch to an electrolyte-resistant thickener.
