Question

Regarding the solubility of Citromask 1% in Dipropylene glycol:

  1. What percentage of Dipropylene glycol should be used?
  2. What are the steps to incorporate it into the formula?

I prefer not to use alcohol. The formula I am using is a cleansing water for makeup removal, with the following desired components:

  • PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate 10%
  • PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides 5%
  • Butylene Glycol 10%
  • Niacinamide 2.5%
  • Citromask 1%
  • Dipropylene glycol (DPG) 1%
  • Polyaminopropyl Biguanide 0.5%

Is this formula acceptable?

Answer

Cleansing Water Formulation with Citromask

You are asking about dissolving 1% Citromask in Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) for your cleansing water formula and the overall formula you've proposed.

Dissolving 1% Citromask in 1% Dipropylene Glycol is a suitable method. Dipropylene Glycol is an effective solvent for fragrances and aroma chemicals like Citromask and helps to disperse them evenly in water-based formulations without needing alcohol.

Here are the steps to incorporate it into your formula:

  1. In a separate container, weigh out your desired amount of Dipropylene Glycol (1% of the total formula).
  2. Add the Citromask (1% of the total formula) to the Dipropylene Glycol and stir until it is fully dissolved.
  3. Prepare the water phase of your cleansing water by combining the water (the remaining percentage to reach 100%) with Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, and Polyaminopropyl Biguanide. Stir until dissolved.
  4. In a separate container, combine PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate and PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides.
  5. Slowly add the water phase mixture (from step 3) to the surfactant mixture (from step 4) while stirring gently to avoid excessive foam.
  6. Finally, add the pre-dissolved Citromask in Dipropylene Glycol (from step 2) to the main mixture and stir gently until everything is uniformly combined.

Regarding your proposed formula:

  • PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate (10%): This is a gentle surfactant suitable for makeup removers. The usage rate of 10% is within the recommended range (1-10%).
  • PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides (5%): Another gentle surfactant that forms micelles, effective for removing makeup. The usage rate of 5% is within the recommended range (1-10%).
  • Butylene Glycol (10%): Acts as a solvent and humectant. The usage rate of 10% is within the recommended range (1-20%) and is a good alternative to Propylene Glycol.
  • Niacinamide (2.5%): Vitamin B3, beneficial for skin. The usage rate of 2.5% is within the recommended range (1-10%). It dissolves in water.
  • Citromask (1%): A scent masker. Dissolving it in DPG first is appropriate.
  • Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) (1%): Used here as a solvent for Citromask. The usage rate of 1% is suitable for this purpose.
  • Polyaminopropyl Biguanide (0.5%): A preservative. The usage rate of 0.5% is within the recommended range (0.1-1.0%) and it dissolves in water.

Your formula uses suitable ingredients for a cleansing water and successfully avoids alcohol as you intended. Ensure the percentages add up to 100% with the remaining portion being water.
