Question
I would like to ask for clarification regarding the use of alcohol in a hair tonic formula. The previous advice mentioned using Ethyl Alcohol at 20-30%. I have Ethyl Alcohol 96%. Do I need to dilute the Ethyl Alcohol 96% before adding it to the formula to achieve the 20-30% concentration in the final product?
Answer
Subject: Clarification on Alcohol Concentration in Hair Tonic Formula
Regarding your question about using alcohol in a hair tonic formula:
The previous advice to use Ethyl Alcohol at 20-30% in the formula means that the final formula should contain 20-30% of pure Ethyl Alcohol (97-100%).
Since you have 96% Ethyl Alcohol, you should use this directly when formulating your tonic. Calculate the amount of 96% alcohol needed so that it constitutes 20-30% of the total weight or volume of your final hair tonic formula. The remaining 70-80% will be made up of water, oils, and other active ingredients.
You do not need to dilute your 96% Ethyl Alcohol before adding it to the formula; the dilution happens as you mix it with the other ingredients to reach the final 20-30% concentration in the total product.
If you choose not to use Ethyl Alcohol, remember to add a preservative like Phenoxyethanol SA (Optiphen Plus) at 1% as previously recommended.
