Question
Could you please clarify the meaning of the term "Organic" when referring to colors, as I understand it differently (natural vs. chemical)? Also, are white and black colors included in the FD&C color list, and if not, what are the common alternatives used for white and black pigments in cosmetics and food?
Answer
White and Black Colors in the FD&C Group and Alternatives
Colors in the FD&C (Food, Drug, and Cosmetic) group are mostly synthetic colors used for food, drugs, and cosmetics. Generally, white and black colors are not included in the FD&C color list.
For white and black colors used in various products, colors from other sources are commonly used instead, such as:
- White: Titanium Dioxide is widely used. It is an opaque white pigment that can be used in both cosmetics and food (food grade).
- Black: Iron Oxides Black is commonly used. It is a black pigment derived from iron compounds and can be used in both cosmetics and food (food grade with low heavy metals). Additionally, Carbon Black is used in some cosmetic products like mascara or eyeliner.
