Cleansing Oil Formulation Separation
Question
I mixed my own cleansing oil using the formula:
Oilsify 30 15%
LipidSoft CC 40%
Butylene Glycol 45%
I found that after letting it sit, it separates into layers. When I want to use it, I have to shake it to mix before use. Is this normal? Or is there a way to make the mixture homogenous?
Answer
Subject: Cleansing oil separation
Hello,
Thank you for sharing your cleansing oil formulation using Oilsify 30 (15%), LipidSoft CC (40%), and Butylene Glycol (45%).
Regarding the separation you observed after letting it sit, this can be normal for formulations that mix ingredients with very different properties, such as oils (LipidSoft CC) and polar solvents (Butylene Glycol), especially when the emulsifier (Oilsify 30) might not be perfectly suited or sufficient to create a stable, single phase for this specific combination and ratio. Oilsify 30 is primarily designed to emulsify oils into water.
Therefore, the separation you are seeing is likely expected for this particular formula. Shaking the mixture before each use to re-disperse the phases is a common and practical way to use such formulations.
To prevent separation and achieve a homogenous mixture that doesn't separate, you would typically need to adjust the formulation. This might involve changing the ratios of the ingredients, substituting one or more ingredients with others that are more compatible, or using a different type or amount of emulsifier or coupling agent that can effectively blend the oil and glycol phases.
In summary:
- Separation is likely normal for this specific formula due to the nature and ratios of the ingredients.
- Shaking before use is the recommended way to handle the separation.
- Preventing separation requires modifying the formulation.
We hope this explanation is helpful!
