Question

My Cleansing Water formulation is causing eye irritation. I used the following ingredients:

  • Water
  • Propylene Glycol
  • make up wash (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) 10%
  • coco-wash (PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate) 10%
  • Cucumber Extract 0.3g
  • Phenoxyethanol (less than 1%)

I made approximately 50.3g of the product. Why is it causing irritation? How can I fix the existing batch and prevent this in future batches?

Subject: Cleansing Water causing eye irritation

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out regarding your cleansing water formulation. It's understandable that eye irritation is a concern.

Based on the ingredients you used and the staff's reply, the most likely cause of the eye irritation is the relatively high concentration of the surfactants, specifically make up wash (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) and coco-wash (PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate). While these ingredients are effective cleansers, using them at higher concentrations can sometimes cause irritation, especially around the sensitive eye area.

The Cucumber Extract you added at 0.3g is unlikely to be the primary cause of irritation at this low concentration.

To fix your existing batch:

As the staff suggested, you can dilute the current mixture to reduce the concentration of the irritating ingredients. Your current batch weighs approximately 50.3g. To significantly reduce the surfactant concentration, please add 50.3g of Water to your existing mixture. This will roughly double the total volume/weight and halve the concentration of all ingredients, bringing the make up wash and coco-wash concentration down to approximately 3.5% each, which is closer to a less irritating level.

Important: After diluting, the concentration of your preservative (Phenoxyethanol) will also be reduced. To ensure the product remains properly preserved, you should add an additional 0.706g of Phenoxyethanol to the diluted mixture. This will bring the total preservative concentration back up to 1%.

For future batches:

To avoid irritation from the start, it is recommended to use lower concentrations of the surfactants. Based on the staff's suggestion to start testing at 3%, here is a suggested formula for a 100g batch using lower surfactant levels and the recommended 1% preservative:

  • Water: 84.7 g
  • Phenoxyethanol (Preservative): 1 g
  • Propylene Glycol: 5 g
  • make up wash (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides): 3 g
  • coco-wash (PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate): 3 g
  • Cucumber Extract: 0.3 g
  • Total: 100 g

Using this formula should provide effective cleansing with significantly reduced potential for eye irritation. Please note that reducing the surfactant concentration might slightly decrease the makeup removal power compared to your original formula, but it prioritizes gentleness for the eyes.

We hope this helps!
