Question

In a formula containing `activated resorcinol` that causes irritation, can `Allantoin` be used instead of `Bisabolol` to reduce irritation? Or is `Bisabolol` more suitable?

Answer

Hello!

We understand you are considering anti-irritant ingredients for a formula containing activated resorcinol and are wondering if Allantoin can be used instead of Bisabolol, or how Bisabolol might be more suitable.

Based on the previous staff advice, directly comparing the effectiveness of individual anti-irritant ingredients is challenging due to various factors influencing performance. However, both Allantoin and Bisabolol are known to have good anti-irritant properties.

As previously recommended, for formulas that tend to cause irritation, such as those containing activated resorcinol, using a combination of several anti-irritant ingredients is generally more effective than using just one. The staff previously suggested an example blend including Allantoin, Bisabolol, Rhamnose, and Vitamin B5 (Panthenol).

Therefore, instead of choosing one over the other, using both Allantoin and Bisabolol together in a formula with activated resorcinol, possibly along with other anti-irritants, will help enhance the reduction of irritation.
