Comparing BioSulphur EQ and Ichthammol for Rashes/Itching and Odor Control in Cream
Question
I am interested in using ingredients for treating itching and rashes. I understand that BioSulphur EQ is a processed version of Ichthammol with less odor. My specific question is:
- Does the pure, black Ichthammol have a strong, pungent odor?
- If I use Ichthammol in a cream formulation, how can I effectively mask its odor?
- Specifically, can Odor-Kill be used for this purpose, and at what percentage (
0.5%to1.0%)? Will it affect other ingredients like fragrance?
Answer
BioSulphur EQ vs. Ichthammol for Itching and Rashes
BioSulphur EQ and Ichthammol are both based on Ichthammol, but they have key differences, particularly regarding their odor and processing.
- Ichthammol (Pure, 99%): This is a high-purity form of Ichthammol. It is a dark black, viscous liquid with a strong, pungent odor. It is effective at killing bacteria and reducing inflammation. It is dispersible in Glycerin, Alcohol, or oil.
- BioSulphur EQ: This product is a processed version of Ichthammol designed to have a significantly weaker smell while retaining similar performance. It is a dark brown liquid with only a faint sulfur smell and is water-soluble.
Both ingredients are effective for reducing itching and treating rashes. For a cream formulation aimed at these concerns, both could potentially be used. However, due to its much milder smell, BioSulphur EQ is generally easier and more pleasant to incorporate into cosmetic formulations like creams compared to the strong odor of pure Ichthammol.
If you choose to use the pure Ichthammol with its strong odor, you can use a deodorant additive to help mask the smell. Odor-Kill is recommended for this purpose. It is effective at absorbing chemical odors. You can add Odor-Kill at a rate of 0.5% to 1.0% to your cream formulation. Be aware that Odor-Kill can also absorb fragrances, so it may not be suitable if you plan to add perfume to your cream.
