Question

Can Copper Peptide (GHK-Cu), Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA), and L-Carnitine be combined in one cosmetic formula?

Answer

Combining Copper Peptide, LHA, and L-Carnitine in One Formula

Generally, combining all three ingredients, namely Copper Peptide (GHK-Cu), Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA), and L-Carnitine, in the same formula is not recommended for optimal performance and stability of each ingredient.

The main reason is the difference in optimal pH levels for the function and stability of each ingredient:

  • Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA) is an exfoliating acid that requires a relatively low pH to work effectively.
  • Copper Peptide (GHK-Cu) has an optimal pH range for stability between 4.5-7.4.
  • L-Carnitine works well in the pH range of 6-7 and is stable between pH 3.5-8.

Since LHA requires an acidic environment, it may lower the formula's pH too much, which would negatively impact the stability and efficacy of Copper Peptide.

However, Copper Peptide and L-Carnitine can be combined in the same formula. The pH of the formula should be adjusted to be within the optimal range for Copper Peptide, which also falls within the range where L-Carnitine works well (approximately pH 4.5-7.4).

For Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA), it is recommended to use it in a separate product or at a different step in your skincare routine, allowing each ingredient to work effectively without interfering with each other.

Adjusting the pH in cosmetic formulations is necessary for active ingredients to work well and remain stable. However, finding a single pH value that is optimal for all three ingredients simultaneously is difficult, which is why combining all three is not recommended.
