Creating Dry Oil and Alcohol-Free Perfume

1. Dry Oil Formulation

To create a lightweight dry oil using natural oils like Sweet Almond Oil, Avocado Oil, and Argan Oil, you can combine them with specific types of silicone oils. Natural oils provide nourishing benefits, while lightweight silicones reduce the greasy feel and give a smooth, dry finish.

Suitable silicone oils for a light texture include:

• Cyclopentasiloxane: A lightweight silicone that evaporates quickly, leaving a silky feel.
• Trisiloxane: An even lighter silicone that evaporates very quickly, emphasizing a light feel and helping spreadability.
• Dimethicone (Very Light grades): Silicones with very low viscosity (e.g., 1.5, 2, 3, 5, 10 cSt) that provide a soft, smooth coating without being heavy or sticky.
• Caprylyl Methicone: A modified Trisiloxane that is very light and evaporates quickly, with good solubility in various oils.

Avoid using heavier Dimethicone grades for a dry oil formulation.

Ratio: A good starting point is to use a higher percentage of the lightweight silicone oil compared to the natural oils. For example, you could try a ratio of 60-70% silicone oil and 30-40% natural oils. You can adjust this ratio based on your desired feel – more silicone for a drier finish, more natural oil for increased nourishment.

Additional Ingredients: When mixing natural oils and silicone oils, separation can sometimes occur. To help prevent this and ensure a stable blend, you can add a small amount of a blending agent or emulsifier designed for oil and silicone systems. Consider using:

• Oil Blender™: Can help combine various oils and silicones.
• SiliSolve Plus™: Specifically designed to bind water, oil, and silicone, which can be very effective in stabilizing mixtures of natural oils and silicones.

2. Alcohol-Free Perfume

For an alcohol-free perfume aiming for long-lasting scent, mixing fragrance oil directly with silicone oil is generally not the most effective method for achieving good scent longevity on the skin. While some silicones can dissolve fragrance oils, they do not act as true fixatives to slow down the evaporation of the fragrance.

To make a fragrance last longer without alcohol, a dedicated fragrance fixative is typically recommended. These ingredients are designed to reduce the evaporation rate of fragrance compounds, helping the scent linger on the skin for a longer period.

If your perfume base is not purely oil/silicone (e.g., includes water or a water gel), a solubilizer like Flora Solve™ Clear can be used to effectively mix the fragrance oil into the base, but its primary function is not scent longevity.

Therefore, for an alcohol-free perfume focused on lasting scent, look for ingredients specifically marketed as fragrance fixatives rather than relying solely on silicone oil.
