Question

I want to make a cosmetic product in powder form, similar to baby powder. Is it possible to mix the following powders?

  • [Product Name: Silk Talc Powder (Silane Coated)]
  • [Product Name: Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (Powder, Timed-Release)]

If I mix these and apply it to the face of someone with acne and very oily skin, will it be effective?

Answer

Creating a Loose Powder with Talc and Encapsulated Salicylic Acid

It is physically possible to mix Talc Powder (5 Micron, Methicone Coated) and Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (Powder, Timed-Release) together to create a loose powder. However, the effectiveness of this mixture for treating acne and controlling oil on the skin might be limited compared to using the ingredients in a properly formulated product.

Considerations:

  • Encapsulated Salicylic Acid Function: The Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (Powder, Timed-Release) is designed to release the active Salicylic Acid gradually over time when applied to the skin. The product description indicates it is intended to be dispersed in gel or cream formulas, which provide a suitable environment for the timed-release mechanism to work effectively.
  • Effectiveness in Dry Powder: Simply mixing the encapsulated powder with a dry base like talc may not allow for optimal release and delivery of the Salicylic Acid to the skin compared to a gel or cream base.
  • Powder Formulation: A typical loose powder formulation often includes various types of powders, binders, and other ingredients to ensure good adherence, texture, and oil absorption on the skin. A simple two-ingredient mix might not perform as well as a professionally formulated loose powder.

While you can mix these powders, for better efficacy of the Encapsulated Salicylic Acid, it is generally recommended to use it in a gel or cream base as suggested in its product description. If you wish to create a powder product for acne/oily skin, it would likely require a more complex formulation to ensure both efficacy and desirable cosmetic properties.
