Question
HC Blue 15 is extremely difficult to dissolve. Could you recommend a suitable dissolving aid (co-solvent) and provide the specific method required to achieve complete solubility for this semi-permanent hair dye?
Answer
The difficulty in dissolving HC Blue 15 is common, as this semi-permanent hair dye requires specific conditions. The standard method is to use hot water at 70-80°C.
To significantly improve solubility and ensure a clear solution, we recommend using a co-solvent from the glycol group as a dissolving aid, such as Butylene Glycol (ID: 320) or Propylene Glycol (ID: 138).
Recommended Dissolving Method
- Pre-mix (Paste): Mix the HC Blue 15 powder with a small amount of Butylene Glycol (or Propylene Glycol) to create a smooth, uniform paste. A ratio of approximately 1 part dye to 3-5 parts glycol is generally effective.
- Dissolve with Heat: Add the paste to the water phase of your formulation, ensuring the water is heated to 70-80°C.
- Stir: Stir continuously until the color is completely dissolved and no particles remain. The glycol helps the hot water penetrate and dissolve the dye much more effectively than water alone.
- Proceed: Once dissolved, you can proceed with the rest of your formulation steps.
