Effect of Freezing on Cosmetic Formulations

Question

What happens if I freeze my cosmetic product? Can freezing cause ingredients to recrystallize or separate, and does it reduce the effectiveness of active ingredients like Green Tea Extract and Panthenol (Vitamin B5)?

Answer

Subject: Freezing Formulated Products

Freezing cosmetic products, including those containing Green Tea Extract and Panthenol (Vitamin B5), can potentially cause recrystallization of ingredients. This can lead to the ingredients not dissolving properly in the formula and may reduce their effectiveness, especially for active ingredients which need to be absorbed by the skin.

Cosmetic products should generally not be stored at freezing temperatures. Some formulations designed for cold climates may include anti-freeze agents like Glycols to help prevent freezing and crystallization.
