Eye Makeup Remover Formulation: Irritation and Alternatives

Question

I am formulating a Micellar Water eye makeup remover using MakeUp-Wash™ (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) and coco-wash™ (PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate). I am concerned about potential eye irritation or stinging, even if I use an eye-safe preservative like Eye Preserved™. Could you explain why this might happen and suggest alternative formulations for a non-irritating eye makeup remover, such as a bi-phase formula (possibly using Poloxamer 184) or a Cleansing Oil formula (perhaps using Oilsify 15 as an emulsifier)?

Answer

Hello,

Based on the information provided, the ingredients in the Micellar Water formula you inquired about, specifically MakeUp-Wash™ (PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides) and coco-wash™ (PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate), which are PEG-based surfactants, have properties that can cause irritation or stinging if they come into contact with the eyes. This is true even when using an eye-safe preservative like Eye Preserved™.

If you wish to create an eye makeup remover product that does not cause stinging or irritation, the staff recommends considering a Cleansing Oil formula instead. You can use Oilsify 15 as an emulsifier to combine oil with water.

Regarding the bi-phase eye makeup remover formula that requires shaking before use, which typically uses Poloxamer 184 as a main ingredient, this product is currently not available for sale. It is expected to be available later.

If you are interested in the Cleansing Oil formula, please feel free to ask for more details.

Thank you.
