Question

I need advice regarding a Facial Mist/Spray formulation. 1. Can Mild Preserved Eco™ be used as a preservative in a Facial Mist/Spray that is approximately 90% water and also contains Glycerin and Essential Oil? What percentage should I use? 2. If the spray containing Mild Preserved Eco™ is sprayed on the face and gets into the eyes, will it cause any issues? 3. For the Facial Mist, I want it to feel cool on the face for 2-3 minutes. Which ingredient should I use and at what percentage to achieve a safe cooling sensation?

Answer

Facial Mist Formulation Advice

Here is some advice regarding your facial mist formulation:

1. Mild Preserved Eco™ as a Preservative

  • Yes, Mild Preserved Eco™ can be used in your facial mist formulation which is about 90% water and contains Glycerin and Essential Oil.
  • It functions as a preservative to prevent microbial growth.
  • The recommended usage rate for general cosmetic formulas is 1.0-1.5%. Given the high water content and presence of natural ingredients like essential oil, using 1.5% or potentially up to 2.0% is recommended for effective preservation.
  • Ensure the pH of your final formula is within the effective range of Mild Preserved Eco™, which is pH 4-9.
  • Mix it in the last step of the formula. It can dissolve in water but requires blending for about 5 minutes to become clear.

2. Eye Safety

  • Mild Preserved Eco™ is described as gentle and non-irritating to the skin.
  • However, facial mists are not designed for direct application into the eyes. While the ingredient is considered gentle, it's always best to avoid spraying any cosmetic product directly into the eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.

3. Cooling Agent

  • To achieve a cooling sensation on the face, you can use CoolTouch™ (Menthyl Lactate).
  • This ingredient provides a cooling effect on the skin and is gentler than traditional Menthol.
  • The recommended usage rate is 0.1-1.0%. You can start with a percentage in the middle to upper part of this range (e.g., 0.5-1.0%) and adjust based on the desired level and duration of cooling sensation.
  • CoolTouch™ can dissolve in Glycol (like Glycerin in your formula) or Ethyl Alcohol.
