Question

I am developing a night cream formulation for dehydrated skin with wrinkles and freckles. I would like feedback and suggestions on my formula, which includes:

  • Vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol) 2%
  • Double Hyaluron Liquid
  • WaterLock™
  • Natto Gum
  • Repair Activator (Bifida Ferment Lysate)
  • Matrixyl 3000
  • Argireline
  • Hydrolyzed Silk Protein
  • 1,2-Hexanediol
  • ODA-White Plus™

I am using Butter Cream Maker as the emulsifier. Are there any suggested adjustments or considerations for this formulation?

Answer

Feedback on Night Cream Formulation

Thank you for sharing your night cream formulation for dehydrated skin with wrinkles and freckles. This formula includes several beneficial ingredients targeting these concerns.

Based on your formula and the staff's feedback, here are some points to consider:

  1. Vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol): The staff correctly advised reducing the concentration of dl-alpha tocopherol from 2% to no more than 0.5%. At 2%, this form of Vitamin E is quite viscous and can make the final product feel sticky or heavy on the skin. Reducing it will maintain its antioxidant benefits without compromising texture.

  2. Niacinamide (Safe-B3): The suggestion to add Safe-B3 (Niacinamide) at 5% is excellent. Niacinamide is a versatile ingredient that helps strengthen the skin barrier (beneficial for dehydrated skin), reduces inflammation, and has skin brightening properties that can help with freckles. The staff suggested it could potentially replace Natto Gum, as your formula already contains several other effective moisturizers like Double Hyaluron Liquid and WaterLock™. This substitution would enhance the formula's benefits for strengthening and brightening while still providing ample hydration.

  3. Emulsifier (Butter Cream Maker) and Mixing: As the staff mentioned, Butter Cream Maker typically requires heat for proper emulsification. While you are using a high-speed mixer, ensuring you use the correct type of mixing head (as advised by the staff) is crucial for achieving a stable emulsion, especially if you are trying to minimize heat. If you find it difficult to emulsify without significant heat, you might consider a cold-process emulsifier as an alternative, as suggested by the staff.

  4. Other Ingredients: The other ingredients in your formula are well-chosen for your skin concerns:

    • Repair Activator (Bifida Ferment Lysate), Matrixyl 3000, Argireline, Hydrolyzed Silk Protein: These are excellent ingredients for targeting wrinkles and improving skin elasticity and repair.
    • Double Hyaluron Liquid, 1,2-Hexanediol, WaterLock™, Natto Gum (if kept): These provide strong hydration and help combat dehydration.
    • ODA-White Plus™: This is a good active for addressing freckles and overall skin tone.

Summary of Suggested Adjustments:

  • Reduce Vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol) from 2% to 0.5% or less.
  • Consider adding Safe-B3 (Niacinamide) at 5%. If you add Safe-B3, you might consider reducing or removing Natto Gum to keep the total percentage manageable and avoid excessive viscosity.
  • Ensure your mixing method is effective for emulsifying Butter Cream Maker, following the staff's advice on the mixing head.

Remember to recalculate the percentages once you make any adjustments to ensure they add up to 100%. Overall, this is a promising formula, and with these minor adjustments, it should be very effective for your skin concerns.
