Question
I am looking to develop a pain balm product with a clear, gel texture, similar to the consistency of Himalaya Pain Balm. Could you recommend the necessary gelling agents and provide guidance on the formulation process (including required temperature ranges and typical usage rates) to achieve this specific texture and clarity?
Answer
To create a clear, gel-textured pain balm similar to Himalaya Pain Balm, you should use Oil Thick™ Transparent (ID: 9310) as the gelling agent for the oil base. This product is specifically designed to create a clear, high-viscosity oil gel.
For the characteristic pain-relieving and cooling effect of a balm, you will need to add active ingredients such as L-Menthol (ID: 53813) and Camphor Oil (Brown) (ID: 3186).
General Formulation Guide
- Oil Base: Choose a suitable carrier oil (e.g., mineral oil, light ester oil, or a natural oil).
- Gelling:
- Mix Oil Thick™ Transparent with your chosen oil.
- The usage rate typically ranges from 1% to 10% depending on the desired thickness (start with 3-5% for a soft gel).
- Heat the mixture to approximately 70-80°C while stirring until the Oil Thick™ Transparent is completely dissolved and the mixture is clear.
- Cooling & Actives:
- Once the mixture is clear, remove it from the heat and let it cool down to below 40°C.
- Add L-Menthol (typically 1-5% for a strong cooling effect) and Camphor Oil (Brown) (typically 0.1-1% as a fragrance/sensory modifier, or higher if used as an active). Stir until dissolved.
- Pour: Pour the mixture into containers while it is still liquid. It will set into a clear gel as it cools completely.
