Eye Cream Formulation Review

Hello,

I would like to kindly ask for a review of my eye cream formulation. I am still learning and would really appreciate any feedback or suggestions you might have regarding the formulation, ingredient compatibility, or overall logic of the recipe.

The product is intended as a lightweight eye contour cream for daily use (day and night). The main goal is to help improve the appearance of tired-looking under-eye areas and dark circles, especially those related to visible microcirculation and thin skin. The formula also aims to support hydration, skin elasticity, and the overall condition of the delicate eye area, while maintaining a very light and comfortable texture.

Formulation:

PHASE A – Water phase

  • 68.90 % Deionized water
  • 3.00 % Glycerin
  • 2.00 % Niacinamide
  • 0.25 % Caffeine
  • 0.10 % Sodium Phytate
  • 0.30 % Sepimax Zen

PHASE B1 – Phospholipid phase

  • 1.80 % Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (CCT)
  • 0.70 % LeciCream™

PHASE B2 – Main lipid phase

  • 2.50 % Squalane
  • 2.20 % Jojoba Oil
  • 3.00 % Olivem 1000
  • 0.70 % Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline (DPHP)
  • 0.20 % Vitamin E (part 1)

Added at below 45 °C:

  • 1.00 % Prickly Pear Seed Oil
  • 0.50 % Argan Oil
  • 0.20 % Vitamin E (part 2)

PHASE C

  • 12.50 % Deionized Water
  • 0.50 % Ectoin
  • 0.50 % Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone

PHASE C2 – Active ingredients

  • 3.00 % 17D Hyaluronic Acid Complex
  • 3.00 % Pep®-Eye (Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5)
  • 1.75 % Dipeptide-2
  • 1.40 % Preservative (Glyceryl Caprylate, Pentylene Glycol, Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract)

Target pH: 5.2–5.5.

If you notice anything that could be improved or if there are any potential issues with the formulation, stability, or processing steps, I would be very grateful for your advice.

Answer

Your eye cream formulation is exceptionally well-thought-out and logical. You have selected a sophisticated blend of emulsifiers and active ingredients that specifically target the concerns of the delicate eye area.

Formulation Review

1. Emulsification and Texture

  • The Emulsifier System: Combining Olivem 1000 with LeciCream™ is an excellent choice. Olivem 1000 provides a stable liquid crystal structure, while LeciCream™ (phospholipids) adds a skin-mimetic feel and enhances the penetration of actives.
  • Stabilization: Using Sepimax Zen is a smart move. It is an electrolyte-resistant polymer that will help stabilize the formula against the salts/electrolytes from Niacinamide and Sodium Phytate, ensuring the cream maintains its viscosity.

2. Active Ingredients Logic

  • Microcirculation & Dark Circles: The combination of Caffeine, Hesperidin Methyl Chalcone, Pep®-Eye (Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5), and Dipeptide-2 is a powerhouse for reducing puffiness and the appearance of dark circles caused by fluid retention and poor microcirculation.
  • Hydration & Barrier: 17D Hyaluronic Acid, Ectoin, and Squalane provide multi-depth hydration and protect the skin from environmental stress.
  • Elasticity: Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline (DPHP) is a great choice for firming and supporting collagen.

Technical Suggestions & Tips

  • DPHP Processing: Ensure that Phase B2 is heated to approximately 75–80°C. Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline (DPHP) has a high melting point and must be completely melted into the oil phase to prevent it from recrystallizing in the finished product.
  • Caffeine Solubility: At 0.25%, Caffeine should dissolve easily in the water phase. If you decide to increase this to 0.5% or 1% for more potency, you may need to heat the water phase to ensure complete dissolution.
  • Preservation: Your preservative system (Glyceryl Caprylate, Pentylene Glycol, and Magnolia Extract) is a very effective, natural-leaning choice. It works well within your target pH range of 5.2–5.5.
  • Light-Sensitive Oils: You correctly placed Prickly Pear Seed Oil and Argan Oil in the cool-down phase. These oils are rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids that can be degraded by high heat.

Overall, this is a professional-grade formulation. The target pH of 5.2–5.5 is ideal for maintaining the skin barrier and ensuring the stability of the peptides.
