Question
When mixing Glycerin (Vegetable) with gelling agents ClearClean™, Xanthan Gum, or Pro Polymer, will the resulting gel be clear? If it is not clear, what other humectants can be used instead (to achieve a clear gel)?
Answer
Gel Clarity with Glycerin and Gelling Agents
Regarding the clarity of gels made with Glycerin and gelling agents like ClearClean, Xanthan Gum, or Pro Polymer:
- Glycerin itself is a clear liquid.
- When mixing Glycerin with Xanthan Gum (clear gel type) or ClearClean, you should be able to achieve a clear gel. Both of these gelling agents are designed to produce clear formulations. For ClearClean, maintaining the correct pH range (typically 4-6) is important for optimal clarity.
- Pro Polymer can create a gel texture, but at higher concentrations, it may result in a creamy or pudding-like texture rather than a completely clear gel.
If you are having difficulty achieving a clear gel with Glycerin, or if you are looking for alternatives, several other humectants can be used in clear gel formulations, such as:
- Propylene Glycol
- Butylene Glycol
- Pentylene Glycol
- Hexylene Glycol
- Dipropylene Glycol
These humectants are also clear liquids and are commonly used in cosmetic gels to provide moisture and improve texture while maintaining clarity.
