Question
I’d like to ask about how to use GuarCat™ Standard (1,000-5,000mpas). How should this be used?
Dosage 0.2-0.25% - how can I prevent it from forming beads/clumps?
Answer
GuarCat™ Standard (1,000-5,000 mPa.s) is a water-soluble cationic guar for shampoo/conditioner formulas. For the usage level you mentioned, 0.20-0.25%, use 2.0-2.5 g per 1 kg finished formula, or 0.20-0.25 g per 100 g formula.
Recommended process to reduce clumping:
- Add the formula water first and start mixing to create a steady vortex.
- Sprinkle GuarCat™ Standard slowly, little by little, into the moving water. Do not pour it in as one pile.
- Keep stirring continuously until fully hydrated/dissolved. The catalog guidance indicates about 15 minutes for complete dissolution.
- Keep the water phase/formula pH below 7.0. If the pH is above 7.0, adjust down with citric acid or lactic acid.
- After it is fully dispersed and smooth, continue adding the rest of the formula ingredients.
If it still forms beads, the usual cause is adding the powder too fast or adding it onto still water. Use slower sprinkling, stronger agitation, and give it enough hydration time before judging the texture. Starting around 0.15% is also a good trial point if the formula becomes too thick or heavy.
