Question

I am making a simple Hyaluronic Acid gel by mixing Hyaluronic Acid powder with water. Based on what I know, the resulting gel should be clear. However, the gel I made is cloudy. Could you please explain why my Hyaluronic Acid gel is not clear?

Answer

Why is your Hyaluronic Acid gel not clear?

When making a simple Hyaluronic Acid gel by mixing the powder with water, the resulting gel should typically be clear. If your gel is cloudy, there are a few potential reasons:

  • Incomplete Dissolution: This is the most common reason for cloudiness. Hyaluronic Acid powder needs sufficient time and proper mixing to fully dissolve in water. The recommended method often involves adding the powder to the water phase, shaking or blending well, and then letting it sit (often in a refrigerator) for several hours until it becomes completely clear and uniform, with no visible particles.
  • Quality of the Raw Material: The quality and specific type of Hyaluronic Acid powder you are using can affect its solubility and the clarity of the resulting gel. As mentioned by the staff, the source of your raw material is important.
  • Water Quality: Using distilled or deionized water is recommended for cosmetic formulations to avoid impurities that might affect the clarity of the gel.

To achieve a clear gel, ensure you are using a suitable type of Hyaluronic Acid powder (like Hyaluronic Acid (Standard Molecule) or Hyaluronic Acid (Large Molecule)) and follow the recommended dissolution method carefully, allowing ample time for the powder to fully hydrate and dissolve until the mixture is completely clear before proceeding with your formulation. If using a pre-made base like Hyaluronic Acid Gel Base, it should already be clear.

If you continue to experience cloudiness despite proper mixing and dissolution time, the issue might be related to the quality of the Hyaluronic Acid powder itself.
