Question
I am making a 50 ml reed diffuser product using the following ingredients:
Diffuser base 40 mlน้ำมันหอมระเหย 10mlDPG 5 ml
However, when smelling the product, the scent of the Diffuser base is stronger than the essential oil. The essential oil scent is faint and unclear. Do you have any recommendations?
Answer
Improving Scent Strength in Your Reed Diffuser
It sounds like you're making a reed diffuser but finding the scent of your essential oil is weaker than the diffuser base. Your formula uses 40ml Diffuser base, 10ml Essential oil, and 5ml DPG.
Achieving the right scent strength in a diffuser depends on several factors:
- Fragrance Concentration: The ratio of essential oil to the total liquid volume is key. Your current concentration is around 18% (10ml essential oil in 55ml total). While this is a common starting point, some essential oils or desired scent intensities may require a higher percentage.
- Type of Essential Oil: Different essential oils have varying volatilities and scent throws. Some, like citrus or certain floral oils, diffuse readily, while others may be less potent.
- Diffuser Base Quality: The base liquid plays a significant role in carrying the fragrance up the reeds. A good diffuser base should efficiently wick the fragrance without having a strong odor of its own.
- Role of DPG: Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) is a common solvent used in fragrance applications. It helps dilute the fragrance and can influence diffusion. If your diffuser base already contains DPG or similar solvents, adding extra might further dilute the fragrance.
Suggestions to Enhance Scent Strength:
- Increase Essential Oil Percentage: Try increasing the amount of essential oil in your formulation. You could aim for 20-25% essential oil (e.g., 12.5ml to 15ml essential oil in a 50ml total volume, adjusting the base accordingly).
- Choose a Stronger Essential Oil: If possible, try using an essential oil known for its strong scent throw.
- Ensure Base Suitability: Make sure your diffuser base is high-quality and designed for this application.
- Allow Blending Time: Let your mixture sit for 24-48 hours before inserting the reeds to allow the fragrance to fully integrate with the base.
Experimenting with the essential oil concentration is often the most effective way to boost the scent.
