Question

Could you please recommend a lip balm formula and the different ingredients/agents that need to be used?

Answer

Suggested starter formula: natural-style anhydrous lip balm (100%)

Ingredient % Function
Natural White Beeswax 18.0 Main wax; gives balm body and structure
Candelilla Wax 5.0 Adds hardness and gloss; helps the balm hold shape better in warm weather
Shea Butter 20.0 Rich moisturizing butter; gives cushion and softness
Jojoba Oil 25.0 Nourishing emollient; improves slip, less greasy feel
Fractionated Coconut Oil 30.0 Light carrier/emollient; makes application smoother
LipX®-Sweet 1.5 Optional oil-based sweetness for lip products
Natural Vitamin E 0.5 Oil-phase antioxidant to help protect oils/butters
Total 100.0

Optional adjustments

  • Add oil-soluble flavor: normally ~0.2–0.5%; reduce Fractionated Coconut Oil by the same amount. Use only lip/oral-care suitable flavor.
  • Softer texture: reduce total wax 2–4% and add back oil.
  • Harder / for hot weather: increase Candelilla Wax or Beeswax 1–3% and reduce oil.
  • If using a jar instead of a tube, the wax can usually be slightly lower.

Process

  1. Add Beeswax, Candelilla Wax, Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil into a heat-safe beaker.
  2. Heat and stir until fully melted, around 75–80°C.
  3. Cool slightly. Add Natural Vitamin E and LipX®-Sweet; mix until uniform. If using flavor, add during cooler phase if the flavor supplier recommends it.
  4. Pour while still liquid into lip tubes or jars.
  5. Let set at room temperature. Final hardness usually develops over 12–24 hours.

Notes

  • This is an anhydrous formula, so normally it does not need a preservative as long as no water/water-based ingredient is added.
  • If you want to add water-soluble actives such as glycerin, panthenol or niacinamide, use a water-binding balm system such as Water Balm™ and add a suitable preservative.
  • For a faster route, you can also use a ready-to-customize lip balm base and only add approved color/flavor/sweetener within the base’s recommended handling conditions.
