คำถาม

My lip balm formula contains water, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), wax, and I used Lecithin at 15% as an emulsifier. The formula is separating into oil and water phases. Why is this happening, how can I fix it, and what color will the finished product be?

คำตอบ

Hello,

Based on the analysis of your lip balm formula and the feedback provided, the main reason for the separation of your oil and water phases is that Lecithin is not a suitable emulsifier for formulas containing a high percentage of wax. Even at 15%, Lecithin cannot effectively bind the oil and water phases together in the presence of significant wax content.

The recommended solution to prevent separation in your formula is to use a combination of LotionBliss and Cetearyl Alcohol as your emulsifying system. Both ingredients are necessary to create a stable emulsion when waxes are present.

Regarding the color, while LotionBliss and Cetearyl Alcohol may contribute to a white appearance, your base formula containing waxes will likely be white or yellowish naturally. You will need to add appropriate colorants (like cosmetic-grade pigments or dyes) to achieve your desired red color for the lip balm.

Additionally, please note the earlier suggestion that including water and Ascorbic Acid in a lip balm is generally not recommended due to stability and taste issues. If you proceed with a water phase, using the correct emulsifier system (LotionBliss + Cetearyl Alcohol) is essential for stability.
