Making a Face and Stretch Mark Balm

To make a balm, you will definitely need to use heat to melt the wax and oils together. Waxes have melting points ranging from around 60°C to over 80°C, so heating the oil phase to a temperature above the melting point of the wax you choose is necessary for them to combine properly.

For a face balm, choosing a wax that feels lighter and is less likely to feel heavy or potentially clog pores is important. While no wax is guaranteed non-comedogenic for everyone, some are generally preferred for facial applications:

• Beeswax (Yellow Beeswax, Natural White Beeswax): This is a very common natural wax used in balms and lip products. It has a relatively low melting point (around 60-63°C) and acts as an emollient, helping to soften the skin. It provides a nice texture for balms. When used for the face, consider starting with a lower percentage.
• Tribehenin: This is a soft wax that is often used as an alternative to natural waxes. It is described as non-crystalline and suitable for skin care creams, providing a smooth texture and shine. Its melting point is similar to Beeswax (58-63°C).
• Candelilla Wax, Sunflower Wax, Rice Bran Wax: These waxes have higher melting points and are harder than Beeswax or Tribehenin. They can be used in smaller amounts to adjust the firmness of the balm. Rice Bran Wax is noted for its oil absorption properties and smooth texture.

For a face balm, Beeswax or Tribehenin are often good starting points due to their softer texture and emollient properties. You can experiment with small amounts of harder waxes like Candelilla or Rice Bran Wax if you need a firmer balm, but be mindful of the total wax concentration to avoid a heavy feel. Always melt the wax in the oil phase by heating the mixture until the wax is fully dissolved, then stir as it cools to ensure a smooth, consistent balm.
