Question

How can I formulate a gel containing Mandelic Acid? What is a suitable concentration, especially if I haven't used AHA or BHA before? What are the mixing instructions and precautions for ingredients like Mandelic Acid, Pro Polymer, and Mild Preserved Eco? Can you provide a sample formula?

Answer

Mandelic Acid Gel Formulation

To create a gel containing Mandelic Acid, you can use Pro Polymer as the gel base, as shown in the example formula provided. Pro Polymer is a suitable gel maker for water-based formulas.

For mixing Mandelic Acid powder to achieve the desired concentration, you should first dissolve the Mandelic Acid powder in water. For example, to make a 10% solution, mix 10% Mandelic Acid powder with 90% water. Mandelic Acid can dissolve in water up to 13% at room temperature (25°C).

The sample formula for a 7% Mandelic Acid gel includes:

  • Mandelic Acid 7%
  • Mild Preserved Eco 1%
  • Pro Polymer 1.5%
  • Water (the rest)

Based on the staff's recommendation, if you are new to using AHA or BHA, it is advisable to start with a concentration of 5% or lower. If you have prior experience, you can try 7-10%.

When formulating, dissolve the Mandelic Acid in the water phase first. Then, incorporate the gel maker (Pro Polymer) and preservative (Mild Preserved Eco) according to their specific mixing instructions. Avoid heating Mandelic Acid above 60°C as it can degrade.
