Matte Lip Tint Formulation

This formula is designed to create a matte lip tint with good color dispersion and a smooth feel.

Ingredients

Phase A (Oil/Silicone Base)

  • Cyclopentasiloxane: 30-50%
  • Isohexadecane: 10-20%
  • Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate: 5-10%
  • Octyldodecanol: 3-8%
  • Dimethicone (Light/50): 2-5%
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride: 5-10%
  • Hydrogenated Polyisobutene (750cs): 3-7%
  • Synthetic White Beeswax (Melting 62C): 2-4%
  • Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate: 1-3%
  • Disteardimonium Hectorite: 1-3%
  • Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT): 0.05-0.1%
  • Astaxanthin (10% Algae Extract, Oil): 0.1-0.5%

Phase B (Pigment/Powder Phase)

  • Titanium Dioxide Nanosil (CI 77891): 2-8%
  • Iron Oxides Red (CI 77491): 1-5% (Adjust ratio with other Iron Oxides for desired shade)
  • Iron Oxides Yellow (CI 77492): 0.1-2% (Adjust ratio with other Iron Oxides for desired shade)

  • Caprylhydroxamic Acid: 0.1-0.2%

Phase E (Fragrance)

  • Fragrance: 0.1-0.5%
  • (Ensure total percentage equals 100%)*

Mixing Instructions

  1. Prepare Phase A: Combine Cyclopentasiloxane, Isohexadecane, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Octyldodecanol, Dimethicone, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Synthetic White Beeswax, Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, and Astaxanthin in a container. Heat gently to 70-75°C while stirring until the waxes and Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate are completely melted. Add Disteardimonium Hectorite and mix with high shear (using a homogenizer or high-speed mixer) until it is well dispersed. Maintain the temperature.
  2. Prepare Phase B: In a separate container, weigh and combine Titanium Dioxide Nanosil, Iron Oxides (Red, Yellow, Black), FD&C Yellow No.5 Lake, Anti-Caking Silica, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, and SoftTouch 7™. Add a small amount of the heated liquid mixture from Phase A to the powders to create a thick slurry. Mill or grind this slurry thoroughly using a mortar and pestle, a roller mill, or a high-speed disperser to ensure all pigments are finely dispersed without any clumps.
  3. Combine A and B: Slowly add the pigment slurry from Phase B to the main mixture in Phase A while continuing high shear mixing. Ensure the pigments are evenly and completely dispersed throughout the mixture.
  4. Activate Thickener (Phase C): Add Propylene Carbonate to the main mixture and continue high shear mixing for several minutes. This will activate the Disteardimonium Hectorite and the mixture will begin to thicken and form a gel structure.
  5. Prepare Phase D: In a separate small container, combine Glycerin, Caprylyl Glycol, and Caprylhydroxamic Acid. Stir until all ingredients are dissolved. You may gently warm this phase (do not exceed 40°C) to aid dissolution, especially for Caprylhydroxamic Acid.
  6. Combine D: Allow the main mixture to cool to below 40°C. Add Phase D to the main mixture and mix until fully incorporated and homogeneous.
  7. Add Fragrance (Phase E): Add the Fragrance to the mixture and stir until evenly distributed.
  8. Cooling and Filling: Continue stirring gently while the mixture cools down to room temperature. Once the desired texture is achieved and the mixture is cool, transfer it to the final lip tint containers.

Adjust the percentages of pigments to achieve your desired color intensity and shade. Adjust the percentages of thickeners (Disteardimonium Hectorite, Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate) and powders (Silica, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, SoftTouch 7™) to fine-tune the texture and mattifying effect.
