Measuring MSM Powder by Volume Instead of Weight

Question

I want to make a formulation using 3g of MSM.

Since I don't have a scale, can I measure MSM by volume (ml) instead of weight (g)?

I plan to use the following method:

  1. Weigh the entire package of MSM (e.g., 100g).
  2. Measure the total volume of the entire package of MSM (e.g., 200ml).
  3. Calculate the volume needed for 3g using the formula: (Desired Weight / Total Weight) * Total Volume.
    For example, if 100g is 200ml, then 3g would be (3g / 100g) * 200ml = 6ml.

Is this method accurate for measuring 3g of MSM powder?

Answer

You're asking if you can measure MSM powder by volume (ml) instead of weight (g) since you don't have a scale. You proposed a method to calculate the volume based on the total weight and its measured volume.

While this method of converting weight to volume can work for liquids (where density is relatively constant), it is generally not accurate or reliable for powders like MSM.

Here's why:

  • Powder Density Varies: The volume that a certain weight of powder occupies can change significantly depending on how loosely or tightly it is packed or measured. A scoop of loosely packed powder will weigh less than a scoop of the same powder that is tightly packed, even though the volume (ml) is the same.
  • Volume Measurement is Inaccurate for Powders: Measuring powders by volume using tools designed for liquids (like measuring spoons or cylinders) does not give a consistent or accurate weight.

As the staff mentioned, MSM is a powder. To ensure you are using the correct amount (3g) for your formulation, measuring by weight using a scale is necessary. Relying on volume measurement for powders can lead to inaccurate concentrations in your final product.
