Question
Can Activated Resorcinol and Aristoflex AVC be mixed together instantly, or is a binder/emulsifier needed?
Answer
Mixing Activated Resorcinol and Aristoflex AVC
You cannot mix Activated Resorcinol and Aristoflex AVC powders directly. Here's why and how to properly combine them:
- Activated Resorcinol is an oil-soluble ingredient. It needs to be dissolved in a suitable oil or solvent before being incorporated into a formula.
- Aristoflex AVC is a water-soluble polymer that acts as a gel-former and can also function as an emulsifier (binder) for oil in water-based formulas.
To combine these two ingredients in a formulation, you would typically:
- Dissolve the Activated Resorcinol in the oil phase of your formula.
- Disperse the Aristoflex AVC in the water phase to create a gel or thickened water base.
- Gradually add the oil phase containing the dissolved Activated Resorcinol into the water phase containing Aristoflex AVC, mixing well to create a stable emulsion or dispersion. Aristoflex AVC can help bind the oil phase into the water phase (it can emulsify oils up to 15-20%).
Therefore, while you don't necessarily need a separate, strong emulsifier if the oil percentage is within the capacity of Aristoflex AVC, you do need to prepare the two ingredients in their respective phases (oil for Activated Resorcinol, water for Aristoflex AVC) before combining them. You cannot simply mix the dry powders together.
