Question
I have the following active ingredients:
- Kojic Acid Dipalmitate
- Retinal (Retinaldehyde)
- Activated Resorcinol S™ (Stabilized Liquid)
Can these ingredients be mixed directly together to make a serum?
Answer
Hello,
The list of ingredients you provided consists entirely of active ingredients. These cannot be mixed together directly to create a serum.
To make a serum, you need additional components such as:
- Serum Base: This is the main liquid component (usually water-based) and ingredients that help create the desired serum texture and viscosity.
- Solubilizer or Emulsifier: Some of the ingredients you listed, such as Kojic Acid Dipalmitate, Retinal (Retinaldehyde), and Activated Resorcinol S™ (Stabilized Liquid), are oil-soluble or in a liquid form that requires a solubilizer. If mixed directly into a water-based serum base without a suitable solubilizer or emulsifier, they will separate and not blend properly.
- Preservative: To prevent microbial growth in the product.
- pH Adjuster (if necessary).
Therefore, the list you have is not a complete 100% formula and lacks essential components needed to make all the ingredients blend well and remain stable as a serum.
Recommendation:
- If you wish to make a serum, it is recommended to start by using a pre-made serum base designed for incorporating various active ingredients. This will make it easier to blend the ingredients and achieve a stable serum texture.
- Research each active ingredient you have to understand if they are compatible, if there are any mixing limitations, or specific pH requirements.
- Check the maximum recommended usage percentage for each active ingredient to ensure the final product is safe and effective.
The ingredients you listed include several actives with skin brightening and anti-aging properties, which are beneficial for the skin. However, they need to be incorporated into a correct and complete formulation.
