Mixing Aloe Vera Gel Base (Heavy) and Panthenol ExtraLite at 1:1 Ratio
Question
I am planning to order Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) and Panthenol (Vitamin B5) ExtraLite™.
I would like to know if these two ingredients can be mixed together directly at a 1:1 ratio (half and half) for use on the body?
Answer
Mixing Aloe Vera Gel Base and Panthenol ExtraLite
Thank you for your question regarding mixing Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) and Panthenol (Vitamin B5) ExtraLite™.
While the Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) is designed as a base for mixing with other ingredients, mixing it with Panthenol (Vitamin B5) ExtraLite™ in a 1:1 ratio (50% each) is not recommended.
Here's why:
- High Concentration: Panthenol (Vitamin B5) ExtraLite™ is typically used at a concentration of 1-5% in formulations, with 1-3% being the recommended range. Mixing it at 50% would result in an extremely high concentration, far exceeding the optimal level.
- Texture: Using Panthenol ExtraLite™ at concentrations above 3% can make the final product feel greasy or sticky. A 50% concentration would likely result in a very unpleasant texture.
- pH Level: Panthenol ExtraLite’s optimal pH range for effectiveness and skin compatibility is 4.0-7.0. The ingredient itself has a pH of 9-11. Mixing it at a high percentage could raise the overall pH of the final mixture, potentially making it less effective and less suitable for the skin.
- Odor: Panthenol ExtraLite’s description notes it has a distinct odor that may require fragrance to mask. At 50%, this odor could be quite noticeable.
Recommended Approach:
A better approach would be to add Panthenol (Vitamin B5) ExtraLite™ to the Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) base at its recommended usage rate, which is typically 1-5% (ideally 1-3%). The Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) base already contains 3% Panthenol, so adding an additional 1-3% of Panthenol ExtraLite™ would boost the benefits without negatively impacting the texture or stability.
Both Aloe Vera Gel and Panthenol are excellent ingredients for moisturizing and soothing the skin. Combining them at appropriate concentrations in the Aloe Vera Gel base can create a beneficial product for body application.
