Question
I want to mix Beta Glucan (Saccharomyces cerevisiae extract) and Pep®-Coll (Syn-Coll) together to make a spray. Can these two ingredients be mixed? What type of water should I use? Are there any issues with the mixture?
Answer
Regarding mixing Beta Glucan (Saccharomyces cerevisiae extract) and Pep®-Coll (Syn-Coll) for a spray:
- Mineral Water: It is not recommended to use mineral water in cosmetic formulations. The heavy metals present in mineral water can degrade the properties of cosmetic ingredients, reducing their effectiveness. For cosmetic production, distilled water or de-ionized (DI) water is preferred to avoid these heavy metals.
- Mixing with Distilled Water: You can mix Beta Glucan and Pep®-Coll with distilled water.
- Beta Glucan: This ingredient tends to precipitate in normal water. While you can still use it in a water-based spray, you will need to shake the bottle well before each use to disperse the ingredient evenly. Beta Glucan is generally more suitable for use in cream or gel formulations where it remains stable.
- Pep®-Coll (Syn-Coll): This ingredient does not have issues with precipitation in water.
In summary, while you can create a spray using distilled water, Beta Glucan may settle at the bottom and require shaking before application. Using distilled water is crucial for maintaining ingredient efficacy compared to mineral water.
