Question

I would like to ask about the mixing ratio for Base Serum.

  • If I use 1g of Base Serum, how much water should I dissolve it in?
  • For example, should it be 1g per 1mL of water or 1g per 100mL of water?

Answer

The mixing ratio for a Base Serum depends on the specific type of base you are using and the desired thickness of the final product. Here are the guidelines for common serum bases:

1. Silky Serum Base (Face/Eye)

This base is unique because the more water you add, the thicker the serum becomes.

  • Recommended Ratio: It can be mixed with water (or water-soluble ingredients) at a ratio of 30% to 90% of the total formula.
  • If using 1g of Base:
    • Mixing with 1 mL of water: This is approximately a 50% water ratio. It will result in a liquid serum that is very light and fast-absorbing. This is a valid ratio.
    • Mixing with 100 mL of water: This is a 99% water ratio, which is too diluted. The base will not be able to form a stable serum texture at this concentration (maximum recommended water is 90% or 1g base to 9mL water).
  • Stability: It is highly recommended to add 1% Magnesium Sulfate to the final step to prevent layer separation.

2. Silky Serum Base Plus (Face/Eye, Oil)

This version can incorporate oils (up to 30% of the formula).

  • Recommended Ratio: It should contain at least 60-70% water for stability.
  • If using 1g of Base: You can mix it with approximately 5-6g of other ingredients (water, oil, and actives combined).

3. ANR Serum Base (Compare to Estee)

This is a ready-to-use base that already contains many active ingredients.

  • Usage: It is typically used at 90-100% concentration. You simply add your specific active ingredients directly into the base. It is not intended to be diluted heavily with water.

Important Notes for All Bases:

  • Preservatives: Since you are adding water to the base, you must add a preservative (such as Mild Preserved Eco) to prevent the product from spoiling.
  • Mixing Method: For the Silky Serum bases, always add water to the base little by little while stirring constantly. Adding all the water at once can make it difficult to achieve a smooth, uniform texture.
