Mixing Skin Barrier Cream with Absolue Soft Cream for Enhanced Barrier Repair

Asked by: info On: March 02, 2026 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

Can this be mixed with the Skin Barrier Cream? If so, what percentages should I use for each? I’m looking to make a thicker cream to aid in skin barrier repair.

  • Can I add some of the Aloe Gel Base? If so, what percentage?
  • Will the final formulation require preservatives?

Answer

Yes, you can mix these products to create a customized barrier-repair cream. Since both the Absolue Soft Cream Base and the Skin Barrier Cream Base are water-based emulsions, they are compatible for blending.

1. Mixing Percentages for Skin Barrier Repair

To achieve a thicker texture and focus on skin barrier repair, you should use a high concentration of the Skin Barrier Cream Base, as it is naturally a thick cream and contains concentrated "Skin-Mimic Lipids" (Ceramides, Cholesterol, Phytosphingosine).

  • Skin Barrier Cream Base (Emulsifier Free): 30% – 50%
    • Note: The manufacturer recommends not exceeding 50% because the concentration of active ingredients is very high.
  • Absolue Soft Cream Base (compare to Lancome): 40% – 60%
    • This provides the "soft cream" luxury feel and additional emollients like Shea Butter and Dimethicone to seal in moisture.

2. Adding Aloe Vera Gel

You can add Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) or Aloe Vera Gel (Lite) for its soothing properties.

  • Recommended Percentage: 5% – 10%
  • Texture Impact: Adding Aloe Vera Gel will likely thin the cream rather than thicken it. Aloe gels are water-based and have a lighter consistency. If your primary goal is a thicker cream, keep the Aloe Vera Gel percentage low (around 5%) or omit it if the texture becomes too runny for your preference.

3. Preservatives

Will the final formulation require additional preservatives?

  • Existing Protection: All three bases (Absolue Soft Cream, Skin Barrier Cream, and Aloe Vera Gel) already contain Phenoxyethanol (0.4%). When you mix them, the overall concentration of the preservative remains roughly the same.
  • Recommendation: While the existing preservatives provide protection, the process of DIY mixing (opening containers, stirring, and transferring to a new jar) introduces air and potential contaminants. To ensure a long shelf life (6–12 months), it is highly recommended to add an additional 0.5% to 1.0% of a broad-spectrum preservative like Phenoxyethanol or Flora-Preserve™.
  • If you add other ingredients: If you decide to add extra water, botanical extracts, or other active powders, you must add more preservatives to account for the dilution.

Suggested Formulation for a Thick Barrier Cream:

  • Absolue Soft Cream Base: 50%
  • Skin Barrier Cream Base: 40%
  • Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy): 9%
  • Preservative (e.g., Phenoxyethanol): 1%

Mixing Instructions:

  1. Clean and sanitize all mixing tools and your final container with 70% alcohol.
  2. Combine the Absolue Soft Cream Base and Skin Barrier Cream Base first, stirring until homogeneous.
  3. Slowly fold in the Aloe Vera Gel.
  4. Add the additional preservative last and stir thoroughly for 3–5 minutes.
