Question
I have modified a BHA Toner formulation with the following ingredients and percentages. Could you please advise on the formula's viability, particularly regarding the type of BHA to use and the high percentage of Vitamin B5 (10%) which I am concerned might cause stickiness?
Proposed Formula:
- GlucoBright 4%
- Vitamin B3 5%
- Vitamin B5 10%
- Pro Polymer 1%
- Distilled Water 75.7%
- Mild Preserved 1%
- Encapsulated 3.30%
Answer
Subject: Regarding your modified BHA Toner formulation
Hello,
Regarding your proposed modified BHA Toner formulation:
- GlucoBright 4%
- Vitamin B3 5%
- Vitamin B5 10%
- Pro Polymer 1%
- Distilled Water 75.7%
- Mild Preserved 1%
- Encapsulated 3.30%
Based on the staff's feedback, this formulation is possible with some important considerations:
- BHA Type: You must use the correct type of BHA that is water-soluble, such as "Complex Salicylic Acid (Powder, Water-Soluble)" (Product ID 2014) or "Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (Powder, Timed-Release)" (Product ID 1372). Using other types of BHA may not work in this formulation.
- Vitamin B5 (Panthenol): The concentration of Vitamin B5 at 10% is too high for a toner and will likely result in a very sticky texture. It is recommended to significantly reduce the percentage of Vitamin B5. A more typical and comfortable usage rate for Panthenol in toners is usually between 1% and 5%. Reducing this will make the product much less sticky.
- Other Ingredients: The other ingredients (GlucoBright, Vitamin B3, Pro Polymer, Mild Preserved, Distilled Water) and their percentages seem generally acceptable based on the staff's comments.
- Adjustment: If you reduce the Vitamin B5 percentage, you should increase the percentage of Distilled Water accordingly to keep the total percentage at 100%.
In summary, you can make this formulation, but you must ensure you are using the correct type of BHA and significantly reduce the Vitamin B5 percentage to avoid stickiness.
