PA Rating for SPF Protect Ultra III

Question

Does this substance also give a PA value? How many +?

Answer

SPF Protect Ultra™ III (UVA+UVB) does contribute UVA protection, because the catalog lists it as a UVA+UVB sunscreen blend and its composition includes UVA filters such as Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, and Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate.

However, the current catalog data does not specify a PA rating such as PA+, PA++, PA+++, or PA++++. The catalog only gives approximate SPF performance in an oil-in-water emulsion system:

  • 10% use level: approximately SPF 20-25
  • 20% use level: approximately SPF 50
  • 25% use level: approximately SPF 70-100

PA cannot be calculated reliably from the SPF number or ingredient list alone. If you need to put PA+/PA++++ on a label, the finished formula must be tested for UVA-PF/PPD or the applicable PA method by a lab.
